Effect of New Media on Society

New Media is a necessity in society today. Everyone is connected to the world through social networks. It is almost weird to find someone who is not on a social network. People no longer want to have a phone conversation because they can just connect to people through the internet so much so that cellphone companies have used this to their advantage and created phones that will connect people 24 hours a day 7 days a week to their social network.

Does society as a whole do something about the dark side of these social networks? Yes I believe that as a society we are responsible for how we should control ourselves and children on these social networks. We should act accordingly to the law as if it pertained to the internet.

Advice to Baruch College

It is a good idea that Baruch College is already on facebook, twitter, linkin etc. This is a good way for students to network with staff members, professors, potential acquaitances that may be able to help them find a job.

Maybe Baruch college should make their own Blogspot or social networking site. This way alumni, current and prospective students can help each other with their college experience. Facebook was started in a University and it became big but maybe this social networking site can stay just throughout Baruch college and link blogs, wikis etc.

Old vs New

Old Media is considered newspapers, radio, television, email, etc.

New Media is considered blogs, social networks, wikis, P2P, youtube, etc

Old media is where one can get information but you can not interact with other people through it.

New Media is where you can also get information but you can now interact with different people through it.

Social Networks

Social Networks are great for people in the music, film, books, marketing etc fields. They are able to reach out to many people without having to spend too much money. All they have to do is showcase their products through their pages and people can see and tell the next person.

Social Networks are good because you get to stay in touch with people you haven't spoken to in a very long time for example if you used to live in Florida 5 to 10 years ago and you now moved to Wisconsin, you can now find your old friends through these social networks. Plus the fact that people rather be on their computers to keep in touch with other people makes it so much easier. Or most people have phones that connect them to their social networks at all times.

Maybe social networks has cut down the face to face interaction with people but that hasn't completely eliminated it and it would never be eliminated since we have to interact with people on a daily basis. Social networks also allows bullies to continue to bully other people and pedophiles to get in contact with children but parents should be able to monitor what their children do on the internet.

Blogs vs Wikis

Blogs, to me, are diaries or journals where people can vent about anything or market a product and people can comment on it. It is an outlet where people can get their ideas and innovations across to a large audience in the hopes that people will listen to them. People feel that it is easier to post up their feelings, thoughts, ideas, opinions etc on paper and through the internet rather than in person. People can comment on them but they can't change these ideas.

Wikis are a collaborative source where information can be changed if people believe they know the real answer to them. Wikis are not 100% accurate as for the information in them can be changed as many times as one pleases to. But this is a way people with different ideas and opinions can post on a wiki what they know about a subject.

People in general have egos and feel that they know it all so these wikis can be used to find solutions to serious and fatal diseases such as cancer, aids etc. Scientist can collaborate with one another through the wikis instead of going to conferences to share information. Maybe this will get us one step closer to the cure to fatal diseases.

New Media

What is new media? Well new media is anything that can be manipulated into digital form. It is also a way that any individuals can interact with authors of articles. New media is the way people tend to communicate with one another now a days. People rather talk to one another via blogs or social networks rather than through the phone.

New media is now mainstream and it is the easiest and fastest way to get information regarding everyday news.

Checking Out Some Social Networks Sites

When social networks first came out I didn't realize that they would have such an affect on people including myself. Now, I can not remember what it was or is to not have a myspace page or a facebook.
Lets start with Myspace since I joined that social network a little before Facebook but let us go back in time when MiGente and Black Planet used to own the Social Networks. I first started on these social networks in 2000-2001. I was still in high school. Even though I never had to lie about my age, I had friends who did. This was the beginning (well in my lifetime) of social morals gone wrong! Anyways back to the most current social networks site, Myspace. When I first joined it was 2005 and I did it mostly to keep in touch with old friends and family all over the world. Then it exploded like a phenomenom and you heard about it every, the news, television, radio etc. Employers started to block these websites because they would consume your time and energy on the computer rather than your work. Myspace is was more relaxed and a little more juvinile compared to Facebook. I also believe that it has lost its touch since they have so many young girls posting things on their pages that they should not be posting.
Now Facebook was first created for college students then for students now it's for everyone. It is a way we all keep in contact with each other and marketers are using this to their advantage to push their products to consumers. Facebook is the new Myspace and with the changing of status that occurs every 5 minutes from one of your friends....you know what EVERYONE is doing! This is why marketers are taking advantage of this social network. Myspace is trying to copy Facebook but facebook is a leading innovator.
I have both pages that I have posted on my homepage that I use mostly to keep in touch with friends, family, ex colleagues, classmates etc.

New Media

What is New Media? I could define it by using the text book definition but then some people, such as myself, would not understand. New media is what we as the information age generation use on a daily basis whether it be social networks, blogs, youtube, wikis, blackberries etc. Its a way to always be communicated to one another and a way to have your opinion on matters on the media. Before news was broadcasted and what was said was the "truth". Now through blogs, social networks, email etc we can have our opinions on everyday life and everyday news and people can and will listen. It's a way to have a two way street in the communications field rather than the one way street that we are used to. People are more involved in the community now with the new media.

Term Project

For my term project I have picked Social Networks and social morals. Now what do these two concepts have to do with each other? Well first social networks are not really that censored in the way that anyone can have one no matter the age and no matter the criminal record. There are children who have facebooks and myspaces and they are posting up pictures and creating fake ages for themselves. For pedophiles this is heaven! For parents this is a nightmare! For society this is our responsibilty! How can we monitor social networks without having the government intervene or having it monitored by the government? How can society help all of us keep our morals as if social networks never existed? I feel that each one of us have a responsibility to act correctly anywhere we go physically or digitally. This is why there are a lot of bills being made and are trying to be passed through Congress on how social networks should be created and be controlled by the public.

So I had forgotten that I had set up a blog about a year and half ago. I really don't blog because I am not consistent with it but isn't that the beauty about blogging? You don't have to be conistent and it's at your own leisure? Well either way I am back but this time with my CIS 3810 class so my blogs will be more informative rather than for comical relief or stress relief.

Now in this class we have read about blogging, new media, wikis, social networks, old media, how new media is affecting today's society, how new media will evolve in the next years, etc. In a nutshell people who haven't jumped onto the new media bandwagon, laggards, will have to jump on soon enough. The way people are now communicating with each other is through some sort of new media.

Lets go back a couple of years ago when myspace first started. This website was made originally for musicians to showcase their music, new and old. Then it went further to the public. When I first joined myspace in 2005 I joined with the intentions of reuniting with old classmates and I have found people that I thought I would never see again in my life! Now a days its very common for a man to not ask for a phone number from a woman but to ask for her myspace or her facebook or maybe even email. What happened to phone numbers?!

A glimpse of my "day"

Ah Welcome all to the wonderful life of Maria Luisa Arias Zapata Calzoncillos Correa Chancletas etc.....First I would like to say WEY HEY to everyone and second do you not have nothing better to do that you are reading this? lol
Ah lets talk about my day today January 10th 2008....Primero (ok for the white people who don't understand I suggest you invest in a bilingual dictionary...Just Kidding!) First lets start off by saying only 12 days till my 24th Birthday and I'm actually not too excited but that's for person reasons that one day you will find out....if I decide to stick around and tell you...Second ah I wake up to the sound of 105.9 La Kalle...y?! To piss my parents off! LOL Yes Yes I still live at home...and very damned proud of it! (Actually I think I was kicked out a couple of times but I'm like one of those tenants that just doesn't take a hint! LOL) So I am abruptly woken up by La Kalle and I'm like dammit I have to go to the BRONX today and put up with these people I call tenants. Ah wait let me back up a little and explain what it is I do for a living and why they pay me. I work for Delshah Capital Corp that is a Real Estate Management Company besides many other companies...So these poor helpless people hired me because I spoke spanish...little did they know about me. lol Ok so I am a property manager or like an onsite manager that makes sure that the super and the maintenance guys are doing their job, we are getting paid by the tenants and making sure everything is running smoothly. Oh and one more thing I work with Section 8 and Welfare so if you know ANYTHING about the then you will understand why I HATE this building!

Ok So this building is not too far from my house out in Long Island...yes I know Maria lives where?! Yes Yes Yes I live in the burbs! But don't let it fool you I am from Astoria, Queens and will love it all my life...just not right now cause I got a ticket there the other day...off topic!
Anyways so I get funny tenants coming to my office everyday with complains like:

I have no heat!

I have no hot water!

My toilet is running - please not smart comments on that one cause I can think of a million! LOL

My light is out!

Pesticide and rodents!

I get it all!!!! I also have crazy people who are one day going to drive me insane because I see them everyday with their complains. They complaing about EVERYTHING! I mean they have sort of a right to....Now why do I say sort of?! Because THEY DON'T PAY THEIR GOD DAMNED RENT!!! They come into MY office with their hair done and nails done but they can't pay their $160 portion of the rent! Oh and lets not talk about Christmas how everyone got presents but they can't pay their rent! And they have the nerve to take US to court because they "supposedly" dont' pay their rent because of broken things in their house that we took care of in less than a day but they still aren't paying the rent. Wow must be GREAT to be them! Oh and calling Section 8 or welfare?! Forget about it! They never pick up and when they do ATTITUDE! That's why I LOVE being a BITCH at my job....why?! cause unfortunately you have to lower yourself to their level in order for them to understand you. Crazy right?!

That's just a little part of my day but it's very entertaining at times. I have even gone and knocked on people's doors and I SWEAR TO GOD that one man answered the door in his fucking tight ass thong looking boxers. He only had that on not even slippers and every question we asked him his response was "I DUNNO." I felt like slapping some answers into him! He had a huge pot/beer belly and some crusty looking toes! I couldn't help but notice this! lol
This is why I say WOMEN please please please please please marry a guy who is going to support you and not depend on some government program to pay your rent! It's a disgrace to the hispanic community how some of these hispanics live here. I want to run out of this building most of the time but it's amazing how these peopel LOVE living like this. Have a nasty apartment can't pay the rent but are driving the car of the year! There are actual people who really need this help and some of the people here disgust me!

Ok I think I am angry now so I should stop writing before I get sued by someone....since everyone here is always threatening me that they are going to take me to court! LOL Ah the ignorance of many! lol
